Madoff robbed victims 37,000 victims in 136 countries of $64.8 billion, taking one s money to pay off the other, for two decades before finally being arrested in 2008 after his two adult sons turned him in.
He never showed any remorse, and described his victims as greedy , according to New York Magazine.
Many of his victims came from the Jewish community where Madoff had been a major philanthropist.

His wife, Ruth, 79, is living is Connecticut but has been seen recently in Palm Beach, Florida, where Bernie s younger brother Peter also lives with his wife Marion.

There were no obvious public signs that Bernard L. Madoff, who died Wednesday at the age of 82, would eventually become infamous for running the largest Ponzi scheme in financial history.

For many of the victims of Bernard L. Madoff s massive Ponzi scheme, his death did not assuage their bitterness. There were no obvious public signs that Bernard L. Madoff, who died Wednesday at age 82, would eventually become infamous for running the largest Ponzi scheme in financial history.
From his congressional testimony after the 1987 stock market crash to the regular round tables he participated in at the Securities and Exchange Commission, his image in the public eye was that of a masterful, innovative and eminently dependable financier.

NEW YORK Bernard Madoff, who for decades masqueraded as a successful and trustworthy Wall Street kingpin before admitting to running the largest known Ponzi scheme in history, died on Wednesday in prison where he was serving a 150-year sentence. He was 82.
A spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons said Mr. Madoff died at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, about 3:30 a.m. EDT (0730 GMT).
His death was believed to be from natural causes. Mr. Madoff had suffered from terminal kidney disease and several other medical ailments.
