Music fans around our area are very familiar with The Seldom Scene, as the popular American bluegrass band has been performing around Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., since it first formed in Bethesda, Md., back in 1971. The group has been instrumental in starting the progressive bluegrass movement as their shows often include bluegrass versions of country music, rock and even pop. On New Yearâs Eve, The Seldom Scene will be playing at The Birchmere, in a show that starts at 7:30 p.m., due to restrictions that necessitate the venue close before midnight hits. Still, the band promises plenty of fun and itâs a great way to get ready for 2021. ....
Bluegrass guitarist/singer Tony Rice dies at 69 Sunday, December 27, 2020 – Bluegrass guitarist Tony Rice, a member of the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame, died on Christmas at the age of 69. Rice died sometime Friday morning while making coffee, according to Ricky Skaggs, who played with Rice and released a statement on his behalf. Tony Rice was the single most influential acoustic guitar player in the last 50 years. Many if not all of the bluegrass guitar players of today would say that they cut their teeth on Tony Rice s music. He loved hearing the next generation players play his licks. I think that s where he got most of his joy as a player. ....
