Durban - TAâRIQ Mohabir, of Pietermaritzburg, had just settled in at a student residence at the University of Cape Town (UCT) on Wednesday when, within just four days, a wildfire ripped through the area.
âWe were in our residence when we saw thick clouds of smoke to the point that we felt we could not breathe. It was so hot. It felt like heaters were on in our rooms. Outside was just as hot,â said Mohabir.
The wildfire started on Sunday morning at Rhodes Memorial. It later spread to UCT, then towards the Devilâs Peak Estate/Vredehoek area of the Cape Town City Bowl. Mohabir, 19, a first-year student, is studying business science in actuarial science. He was based at the Glenres Campus. ....

Cape Town â While UCT initially suspended the academic programme for two days due to the fire and evacuation of staff and students on Sunday, it has now been suspended for the rest of the week.
The University of Cape Townâs Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng said that following the assessment of the damages to upper campus, and the need to clean residences and academic buildings it means that the academic programme will be suspended until Friday, 23 April.
âThe academic programme will resume on Monday, 26 April. The faculties will each manage the lost week in terms of the curriculum and will communicate with their students about scheduled tests and assignments,â she said. ....

This remark, posted on Twitter by a user claiming to be a student representative council secretary-general at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), is being investigated by the university. This was announced by UWC council chairperson Yasmin Forbes on Tuesday afternoon.
The suspect made the remark amid the runaway fires that destroyed some of the historic buildings at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and other iconic sites in Cape Town.
It is believed that the fire started near Rhodes Memorial, on the northern flank of Table Mountain, on Sunday morning. ....
