Put simply, the law requires that breeding pigs, egg-laying chickens and veal calves be given enough space to stand and turn around. For pigs, that means they no longer can be kept in narrow “gestation crates” and must have 24 square feet of usable space. Hog farmers argue the changes would be too expensive.
A California law requiring pigs to be able to stand and turn around in their cages could be delayed another two years after a lawsuit from multiple groups.
