crazy that we live in a day and time where people are still threatening to do crazy things for nothing. reporter: ahmed s alleged plot involved stashing bombs in rolling suitcases and setting off explosions during a rush hour attack next year. agents say he had been videotaping subway stations. he allegedly handed over his recordings to someone he thought was with al qaeda, but it was a sting. the fbi was aware of mr. ahmed s activities from before the alleged attempt began and closely monitored him until his arrest. reporter: ahmed, his wife and son live in a virginia suburb where neighbors say he kept a low profile. i m shocked. i never would have expected it out of them. i have seen them a few times. they kind of kept to themselves, but they were nice. reporter: while commuters were shocked, investigators insist ahmed posed no danger. i want to make myself ....
Now to the story of a son fighting to save his elderly father. he s in jail for murder, a crime many people, though, believe he did not commit. someone else has now admitted to the murder. and a clemency board has recommended he be released. so why is arizona s governor refusing to let him go? dan harris reports. i want her to know who i am. reporter: here with ron kempfert, a son on a mission to confront the governor of arizona. kempfert s father was convicted in the 1970s of killing two young adults in the arizona desert. but last year in a rare move, the arizona clemency board unanimously recommended that macumber have his sentence commuted, saying an injustice had been done and pointing out that another man, ernesto valenzuela, confessed to the crime. ....
what we ve been told all these years is wrong. reporter: then, however, the case went to the governor, republican jan brewer. you may know her from her support for arizona s controversial immigration legislation. governor brewer did denied the request from the clemency board whose members she appointed, citing public safety concerns, even though macumber is now in his mid-70s and in failing health. kempfert believes the governor fears looking soft on crime in the middle of a re-election campaign. kempfert said he d been trying to reach the governor. we took him to her office. but we were turned away. unfortunately she s in back-to-back meetings all day. reporter: my name is dan harris from abc news. then we showed up unannounced at a press conference. you won t answer anybody s questions as to why. i ve sent your office two e-mails and a letter. no response. we ve all been asking why. well, you know, it s an unfortunate situation that governors have to make difficult decisi ....
