After the Communications Center started experiencing problems with 911 and 311 calls around 3 30 this afternoon. After that a notice went out from the department. Saying again, there could be a delay for 911 calls. And asking the public not to call 31 1. Because officers would only be responding to true emergencies. Metro was routing calls to North Las Vegas and henderson. And the Department Says metro employees were there to deal with those calls. Say they have heard from people expressing their anger over the 911 failure which may have left some callers waiting 30 to 50 minutes. Heres what assistant sheriff tom roberts told us it is unclear how many callers were affected over the six hour period. Calls were dispatched to henderson and North Las Vegas where metro staffers went to help answer the rerouted calls after the problem was discovered around 3 30 tuesday afternoon. The Industry Standard for 911 is for a call to be answered in ten seconds. But yesterday callers could have waited 30 to fifty minutes. And before calls were rerouted, some calls were dropped. Roberts apologized to the community. He said it is unlikely a failure like this would happen again. There is additional monitoring and staffing though just in case and to also help figure how the failure happened. He said foul play has been ruled out though.
