Read Article BUCKFIELD With checks piling up at the Town Office, the Select Board appointed Town Manager John Andrews as deputy tax collector at Monday’s meeting. The town has not had an acting tax collector since early November when Town Clerk Cindy Dunn resigned. According to state statute, Dunn is still technically the tax collector until the town audit is completed. A legal opinion from the Maine Municipal Association said the town could appoint a deputy tax collector in order to cash the checks and tax payments in the interim. The board also appointed Andrews to be the point person between the town and the accounting firm Ron Beaulieu & Co. of Portland, which is conducting the audit. Andrews reported that the town delivered 115 pounds of materials for the audit two weekends ago. ....
BUCKFIELD The town is still struggling to close the books with its former tax collector. With the “consideration and discussion of settlement and discharge with tax collector” on its agenda Thursday night, the board requested that Town Manager John Andrews contact the town’s attorney on what their next step should be. The motion, proposed by Martha Catevenis, passed unanimously by the three members, who include Cheryl Coffman and Chairman Tina Brooks. “The term ‘settlement and discharge’ is the standard language used when a tax collector separates from a municipality,” Andrews said on Friday. “Basically it means to settle accounts to make sure everything they were bonded for matches up and then they are discharged from their tax collector duties,” he added. ....
