The brand s new chief demands changes. The initial plan was to unveil the Alfa Romeo Tonale, a compact crossover the Italian brand desperately needs to help dramatically increase sales, sometime this summer. That launch has now been delayed by at least three months, an inside source informed Automotive News Europe. The reason reportedly has nothing to do with factory shutdowns or a semiconductor chip shortage, but rather because the brand s newly installed CEO, Jean-Phillippe Imparato, was not pleased by what he saw. Previously in charge of Peugeot, he took over Alfa Romeo earlier this year following the FCA-PSA Groupe merger to create Stellantis. The Tonale s problem was the plug-in hybrid variant. Imparato wants performance improvements and those modifications will require additional time. Alfa Romeo declined to comment on the matter. ....
Long live Chrysler! Peugeot has not sold new vehicles in the United States for three decades and it never will again. Following the merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Groupe PSA to create Stellantis, now the world s fourth-largest automaker, it s been officially decided by CEO Carlos Tavares that Peugeot will remain overseas-only. Automotive News Europe has learned this decision is final. PSA previously began to seriously explore Peugeot s potential return to the North American market in 2017 when it tipped Larry Dominique to lead those efforts. Last Friday, Dominique was reassigned to lead the Alfa Romeo brand in North America as Stellantis continues to focus on existing brands. ....
FCA Tavares was specifically asked about plans for the Italian brands, such as Alfa Romeo and Maserati. It s too soon to talk about it, but we recognize the high value of those two brands. Therefore, our intention is to study their profitable growth. We will find a way to help them progress. We have no intention to do anything else other than supporting them and helping them rebound. Both Alfa Romeo and Maserati have struggled recently, although the latter at least has some intriguing future plans for electrification. By joining Stellantis, both Italian brands, and possibly the Fiat and Lancia brands too, should benefit from platform sharing across the portfolio. ....
The Italian carmaker is officially done with hatchbacks. The car world mourns the loss of yet another hatchback as the Alfa Romeo Giulietta will stop being produced after 2020. The Giulietta was never offered here in the United States, even though Alfa Romeo trademarked the name back in 2017. Still, word of its fun-to-drive nature and Volkswagen Golf-rivaling driving pleasure made its way across the pond, and we are sad to see it discontinued. After discontinuing the MiTo back in 2018, Alfa Romeo no longer has any hatchback models in its lineup. This makes sense, as the Italian brand has recently transitioned to be a stylish luxury alternative to BMW and Mercedes with new products like the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV. ....
