Assam Election Results: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears set to retain power in Assam as poll trends show the saffron party taking a decisive lead against rivals Congress, Badruddin Ajmal s AIUDF and others. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal thanked the people of state for keeping faith in the party. The ruling BJP-led NDA is surging ahead of the Grand Alliance spearheaded by the Congress in Assam, leading in 77 of the 119 seats, latest trends available on the Election Commission website said. People have blessed us. We can say for sure that the BJP will form government in Assam. We are coming back to power with our partners AGP and UPPL, Sonowal said. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) contested 92 seats and its alliance partner Asom Gana Parishad on 26 seats. GUWAHATI: Polls in Assam will come to an end at 6pm on Tuesday with voting in 40 constituencies, which includes four high-profile constituencies of Guwahati, in the last phase.
A total of 337 candidates, which includes BJP’s 52-year-old star campaigner Himanta Biswa Sarma, are contesting in this phase. Sarma, who is seeking a fifth consecutive victory from the Jalukbari constituency, is in a direct contest with Congress’s Romen Chandra Barthakur.
The biggest challenge for the Election Commission will be achieving an impressive voter turnout in the last phase after the first two phases held in 86 constituencies registered a lower polling percentage than 2016. ....
