bronoman recalls leadership during world war ii. good morning and welcome to the roosevelt presidential library. we re glad to have you today and happy about our annual reading festival and this wonderful turnout as well. especially on our 75th 75th anniversary which we re celebrating june 30th. i think that president roosevelt would be quite pleased to see everyone and to see this turnout and to know that his library, as he intended, would be used torii search and scholarship to continue to explore the issues of his era, and especially how they still have an impact today on political and social life. now i m going to speak for just a moment about how this works. many of you already know there will be 30 minutes during which mr. bornamman will speak to you about his book, and then we ll follow with ten minutes worth of questions we ask you to good to the microphone because we re fortunate to have c-span with us today, and it s great if your questions can be heard s ....
presidents day. they are all different but truman grew into the draw. he impressed people from the very beginning that he was a workaholic. worked about 18 hours a day, stickler for punctuality., stickler for punctuality. he actually had six clocks in the oval office. he was punctual all of the time. six clocks clocks in the oval office and he worked his fingers to the bone. as you know, he had that sign on his desk that said the buck stops here. he is trent was a no bs kind of guy. if you think that franklin roosevelt lived in challenging times which he certainly did, just imagine what harry truman had to deal with. he world war ii had ended on his watch, hitler surrendered two weeks after he took office and then he had to decide whether to use the atomic bomb against japan. the korean war, the berlin berlin airlift, the creation of nato, on and on and on. whether he should fire douglas macarthur, all huge decisions any handle them. he never looked back. truman always ....
he has previously written the admiral, which was the winner of the samuel eliot morrison award in naval literature. his commentaries appeared in the new york times, washington post and wall street journal and other places. so without continuing for too long we are all here to hear walter borneman. [applause] thank you so much. it s wonderful to be here in hyde park, and i indeed going to talk about macarthur, macarthur at war: world war ii in the pacific but a really thought i wanted to bring this because of our historic venue. a little bit more about the relationship between douglas macarthur and franklin roosevelt. and permit me if you will to actually start with someone else, admiral william leahy. now, you roosevelt scholars in the room know him as roosevelt chief of staff. his wartime counselor, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, and really a de facto national security advisor long before that position was set up. and four years ago when it published ....

thing is they hired a copy editor to go through and check the facts and spellings. they checked the names of these american soldiers and it was remarkable the kind of work they did. i taught english, not history. and as you might expect, i had some discussions with them. they wanted me to explain the unknown soldier was. and i said look if i ask you to people that are going to buy a history book that the soldiers and unknown soldier from france i said i would be laughed out of the whole. the general ever a justification for what he did, or did he protect him enough that he never had to deal with them? the one thing he did, this isn t the first thing he did something like this to another officer. it had happened before. but he knew the best defense was isa good offense. and after he passed by, he began to complain they are shooting at us from the hill. so that takes a lot to complain about but when you haven t done what you should have done is complain about the troops ....
