Despite being uninhabited and strictly protected by the Seychelles Islands Foundation, the islands of the remote Aldabra atoll are said to have more plastic trash per square foot than any other island on Earth. The debris has not only harmed wildlife but also damaged entire ecosystems.
Thanks to a convergence of ocean currents, some of the most remote islands are bearing the brunt of the world’s marine plastic pollution. The problem is getting worse: A study published in July 2020 by the Pew Charitable Trusts found that, if current trends continue, plastic flows into the ocean will nearly triple by 2040, reaching 32 million tons – the equivalent of about 35 pounds for every foot of the world’s coastlines.  ....

New rules to tackle ‘wild west’ of plastic waste dumped on poorer countries

New international rules to tackle the “wild west” global trade in plastic, which has seen wealthy nations dump contaminated plastic waste on to poorer ones, will result in a cleaner ocean within five years, according to a UN transboundary waste chief.
The rules, which come into force on 1 January, aim to make the trade more transparent in order to allow developing nations such as Vietnam and Malaysia to refuse low-quality, difficult-to-recycle waste before it is even shipped.
“It is my optimistic view that, in five years, we will see results,” said Rolph Payet, the executive director of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions. “People on the frontline are going to be telling us whether there is a decrease of plastic in the ocean. I don’t see that happening in the next two to three years, but on the horizon of five years. This amendment i ....

Story at a glance
Many richer nations deal with difficult-to-recycle or contaminated plastic by exporting it to poorer countries.
An amendment to the Basel Convention restricts this practice, forcing bigger countries to deal with their plastic waste production.
The United States did not ratify the amendment, but will no longer be able to export to Basel countries.
When China banned plastic waste imports in 2018 it exposed just how much waste the world s wealthiest countries were dumping on poorer countries. Now, those countries are sending it back and the world’s oceans may be better for it.  ....
