IRELAND’S OLYMPIC AND Paralympic hopefuls continue to impress on the Road To Tokyo this week, with gymnastics and swimming taking centre stage today.
One of Ireland’s biggest medal contenders for the Games, Rhys McClenaghan, qualified in first place for the pommel horse final at the European Championships in Basel, while Adam Steele booked his spot in the all-around final in 20th position. ....

Italian swimmers impress on home water at World Series in Lignano

Italian swimmers put in some strong performances on home water on the opening day of the World Para Swimming World Series meeting in Lignano Sabbiadoro.
World champion Simone Barlaam led a host nation clean sweep in the men’s 100 metres freestyle S1-13 category, with the S9 swimmer triumphing in a time of 54.52sec, which scored him 1,012 points.
Silver went to compatriot Antonio Fantin, an S6 swimmer, in a world record time of 1min 04.52sec, giving him a score of 1,009, while the podium was completed by Francesco Bocciardo, an S5 swimmer, in 1:10.04, which scored him 999 points.
Italy’s world champion Carlotta Gilli was beaten in the women’s 100m S1-13 category, as compatriot Arjola Trimi, an S3 swimmer, took gold in 1:33.92, scoring 974 points. ....
