As Brazil hit a record high number of new COVID-19 cases, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro hit a record low public approval rating over his handling of the pandemic.
Brazil recorded a single-day record of more than 90,000 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. An opinion poll published by Brazilian newspaper
Folha de S.Paulo on the night before found that 54 percent of respondents believed that the president s management of the public health crisis was bad or awful, according to Reuters. The head of the World Health Organization criticized rich nations and drug companies for allowing younger, healthier adults to get vaccinated ahead of health workers and older people in poor countries. “The world is on the brink of a catastrophic moral failure,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
The European Union’s executive arm will urge member states to set a target for vaccinating at least 70% of the bloc’s population by this summer, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel and state leaders appear likely to extend lockdown measures. ....

Amid a devastating resurgence of the coronavirus in parts of Brazil, federal health officials have finally voted to authorize two vaccines for emergency use. Sunday, Brazilian regulatory agency Anvisa approved both the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine and the Coronavac vaccine.
Minutes later, Monica Calazans, a Black nurse from downtown São Paulo, became the first Brazilian to be vaccinated. Calazans, who is at high risk for Covid-19 complications and works in an ICU that has been at 90% capacity or above since April, exploded into tears before receiving the Coronavac shot. ....
