Photo leaves you seeing Blackburn's Sun and Star paper mills

This aerial photograph records a piece of Blackburn’s industrial heritage. Sadly we don’t have a date for the picture but in the foreground you can see the Star Paper Mill at Feniscowles and behind it the Sun Paper Mill. The Star Paper Mill opened in 1875, taking over from the Roddlesworth Paper Mill at Abbey Village and would continue for well over a century, closing in 2008, when it was owned by Sappi. The nearby Sun Paper Mill, originally the Feniscowles Paper Company, was first registered in 1882 and closed in the 1980s. At one time in the late Nineteenth Century five paper mills took advantage of the ready water supply from the River Roddlesworth and the huge growth in demand for paper both for printing and for wallcoverings

Outrage as United Utilities destroy stone wall ruins on moorland near Darwen

The remains of the wall, and how it stood before contractors bulldozed it down Avid walkers and historians were left outraged after the ruins of an old farmhouse wall were demolished by United Utilities. A photo taken on Wednesday last week shows piles of stones as all that remains of the Drinkwater Farm stone wall on Great Hill, which according to locals, previously stood almost three metres high. The damage was done by contractors working for United Utilities, who were carrying out work to create a turning area for emergency service vehicles in preparation for moorland fire season. The water company said the scope of their work did not involve doing anything to the ruins, however, residents and those who regularly visit the area, on Anglezarke Moor between Darwen and Chorley, say the site, which was allegedly used as a target practice during the Second World War, had been destroyed to save a few hours of work , and demanded it be restored immediately.
