The South Dakota Newspaper Association held their annual Better Newspaper Contest awards ceremony via Zoom April 29. Both the Southern Union County Leader-Courier and Dakota Dunes/North Sioux City Times won third place for General Excellence in their respective divisions. The award recognizes the entire content of the newspaper and the scope of community coverage. Itâs the eighth time the Leader-Courier has been recognized in that category. Both papers were also third in Typography and Design, which reflects the overall appearance of the paper, including photo arrangements, layout of the page and placement of advertisements. Editor Susan Odson and reporter/photographer Beth Sherard-Fennel accepted the awards. ....

North Sioux City Petitions for open council and mayoral spots closed in North Sioux City Friday, Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. North Sioux City will have two races this year. Running for Mayor are Linda Cutsinger and Patty Teal. Current Mayor Rodd Slater announced during the Jan. 19 council meeting that he would not be running for mayor in the upcoming election due to family and personal reasons. He thanked all the staff and employees at the city for working with him, the residents of Ward 4 who elected him to the city council seat and the council for appointing him as mayor. ....
At the Dec. 7 meeting, the North Sioux City City Council voted to issue bonuses to all city employees and city council members in the amount of $1,425. This motion passed 8-0. However, after the fact, North Sioux City City Administrator Eric Christensen conferred with City Attorney Darrell Jesse and learned that a bonus cannot be issued to council members through a motion. According to South Dakota Codified Law 9-14-28 Salaries and compensation of municipal officers, amounts of salaries and compensation of all municipals officers must be set through ordinance or resolution. In accordance with law, the payments were not made to city council members. ....
