Australia’s coast is the final resting place of more than 11,000 shipwrecks – roughly one wreck for every three kilometres of coastline.
Striking the Great Barrier Reef’s Myrmidon Reef in 1989 was Foam, a British topsail schooner.
Foam was on its way to the South Island Seas.
Sovereign was a paddle steamer from Moreton Island which was bound for Sydney when it was swamped by waves in the treacherous South Passage Bar, Moreton Bay, in 1847.
Aboriginal men risked their lives and rescued 10 people while the remaining 44 passengers and crew perished.
Foam and Sovereign are just two of the 14 “most compelling” shipwreck stories that were selected from the nominations of 46 Australian Maritime Museums and Heritage institutions.

A collection of music written and recorded by 12 Livingstone residents will be launched at a free concert in Yeppoon on Saturday.
The ‘No Covers: Original Music by Resilient People’ CD contains 12 original songs by people who have faced depression, domestic abuse, physical disability, and mental health problems.
The songs were written at a songwriters’ workshop held over eight weeks in Yeppoon, funded by Carinity Education Rockhampton.
Workshop facilitator Narelle Schirmer said the songwriters “found their own voice” writing the songs, many of which expressed the difficulties in their lives.
“The resilience of these people, the camaraderie and feeling of trust to share their stories and their feelings was inspiring,” she said.

It was a wonderful show 10 months ago and it has been an anxious wait for Mamma Miaâs return to the Pilbeam.
The wait is over for the much anticipated second run of the Rockhampton Regional Councilâs musical Mamma Mia!, with tickets going on sale on Monday, 1 February, at 9am.
The season was cut short last year due to the COVID 19 pandemic, and since then demand has been growing to remount the production. Pepper (Daniel Hair) and the boys keep it light in Mamma Mia
Rockhampton Regional Council Community Services Portfolio spokesperson Cr Drew Wickerson said Mamma Mia! was already a record-breaker when it was forced to close after the first week.
