Shingle Mountain
After nearly two years of litigation, the city was allowed to begin removing Shingle Mountain, 98,000 tons of abandoned asphalt shingles at 9500 S. Central Expwy. According to a release, Roberts Trucking will move the shingle material to McCommas Bluff Landfill, which plans to recycle it. The removal is being supervised by Modern Geosciences to address environmental concerns, and is anticipated to be complete by the end of March 2021. ....

'Shingle Mountain' Removal Begins In Southeast Dallas

A yellow bulldozer carries a pile of shingles on Thursday morning. This is the first day of a long removal to teardown Shingle Mountain, a giant pile of toxic waste that s been located in southeast Dallas for nearly three years.
After a years-long fight to remove Shingle Mountain, about ten trucks on Thursday morning began to haul away the six-story pile of roofing shingles in southeast Dallas.
City officials say the teardown is expected to be completed by March 2021.

Starting at 8 a.m., large trucks from Roberts Trucking Inc. began to haul shingles away. The crew estimated there were over 100,000 tons of them on site. ....

Advocates Say Removal Of 'Shingle Mountain' Is Only The Beginning

Marsha Jackson, a resident at Floral Farms, looks at the giant pile of shingles that is visible from her backyard. Jackson says she wears long-sleeved shirts when she’s outside due to the harmful particles in the air.
Though the city has hired a company to haul Shingle Mountain away, residents of Floral Farms in southeast Dallas say tearing it down would be just the start of the recovery process. They re calling for more to be done, including the implementation of a plan that will address racial zoning.
For close to three years, in the agricultural community of Floral Farms, a mound of shingles stands so high that it s been notoriously nicknamed Shingle Mountain. ....
