Said the same thing. so i think she s wise to kind of lay out, again, here and to acknowledge very humanly, i m still in the middle of it myself, but here is what i can tell you as best as i know how at this moment. so donald trump last night, again, brought up charlottesville. yep. you would have think he d realize let it go but he didn t. and he called the people who wanted to take down confederate statues weak, weak people. he said they re trying to take away our culture. they re trying to take away our history. you wrote an op, ep piece about your heritage. how dare you. you have no idea. i mean, you know, my mother is white, as i write about in the piece. and she is the great, great, great niece of robert e. lee. so that makes me four grates. and my father who is african-american, civil rights lawyer, grew up and was a descendent of slaves. he has no idea what the history ....
And culture, a, because i just don t think he s intellectually interested but what that statue represents. i think it s important to note robert e. lee himself didn t want statues because he thought it was important that the country come and heal. but it s important to remember that those statues were built in the early 20th century at the time of jim crow as bay way to say to blacks guess who is still in charge. as i write in the piece on my mother s side of the family, they wouldn t go to my parents marriage. after i was born, other members of my mother s family wanted them to leave me with my father s family and go back to new york. and in a letter that my grandmother wrote to my father, it was not only against the law and the laws of god and nature, it was just against the way of things that blacks had their place and whites had their place and we should all just know that. now, that is the system of the confederacy that donald trump ....
