Over the last two decades, an eclectic mix of designers, sculptors, painters, musicians, photographers and chefs have been migrating to an area called the Shoals: four towns in northern Alabama that hug both sides of the Tennessee River.
Located roughly midway between Nashville and Birmingham, the area acquired its artistic credibility in the 1960s, when local landmark FAME studios in Muscle Shoals recorded hits for musicians like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, the Allman Brothers and the Rolling Stones.
