Tonaki shines Home favourite Irina Dolgova faced Japan’s Tonaki Funa in the -48kg final. Tonaki won it comfortably with an osae-komi for ippon, showing the skills that make the former world champion a favourite for the Tokyo Olympics. Marius Vizer, president of the International Judo Federation, presented her with the gold. Lukhumi Chkhvimiani from Georgia is the -60kg world champion, but he’s been without a podium on this year s grand slam tour. He put that right in Kazan, battling through a tough series of preliminaries before defeating Russia’s Robert Mshvidobadze with a golden score ippon in the final. ....
Tuesday, 4 May 2021 A total of 409 judoka from 79 nations are set to take part in the International Judo Federation s (IJF) Kazan Grand Slam, which will be the last major event ahead of the Budapest World Championships and the Olympic competition in Tokyo. The three-day Kazan Grand Slam starts tomorrow, with the World Championships scheduled from June 6 to 13 and the Olympic judo competition set to begin on July 24. The Russian and Tatarstan Judo Federations have combined to deliver this event in a relatively short time following the signing of the contract, and it replaces the Paris Grand Slam on the pre-Games calendar. ....

With the Doha World Judo Masters which begins today, this has been made possible, thanks to Qatar. The draw for Doha World Judo Masters – the 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifying event took place at the Lusail Multipurpose Hall yesterday. With tight regulations in place as per the Ministry of Public Health guidelines, the Qatar Judo & Taekwondo Federation and the International Judo Federation have ensured a much looked forward to event. IJF President Marius Vizer thanked The Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani during his welcome speech on the occasion of the draw, which was held entirely online. ....
