Grand Portage Band may acquire beach near Grand Marais

Grand Portage Band may acquire beach near Grand Marais MnDOT weighs returning site near Grand Marais as Grand Portage tribal land.  July 15, 2021 7:29pm Text size Copy shortlink: DULUTH – A popular beach just east of Grand Marais, Minn., may return to tribal ownership as the state moves to transfer the property to the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. The Minnesota Department of Transportation owns the former gravel pit and is looking to pass it on after deeming the nearly 2-acre parcel excess. We wanted to figure out how to manage it in a way that keeps it in public use, said Duane Hill, MnDOT s district engineer for northeastern Minnesota. As that discussion ensued, the tribe stepped in and said they have some cultural connection to the property.

Minnesota, Canadian lawmakers search for border solutions

Minnesota, Canadian lawmakers search for border solutions No vaccine passport for travelers to or from Canada yet.  April 6, 2021 2:33pm Text size Copy shortlink: DULUTH – Less than a mile from the Canadian border in the northeast corner of the state, Ryden s Border Store has been painfully quiet for the past year of the pandemic. Owner Mike Boomer said he has lost 90% of his business at the convenience store and gas station, his general manager of more than 10 years departed and he doesn t know where he ll find employees once the border finally reopens to more travelers. Being a third-generation business owner has its own challenges without two governments working against us, Boomer said during a roundtable discussion on the ongoing international border restrictions on Tuesday. We need some sort of opening not tomorrow, we need it now. We need something to start moving.
