Rising up from the jagged Angus coastline, Scurdie Ness lighthouse is a beacon of hope and light.
Even on a dreich day in early March, it projects a little magic into the atmosphere.
It was built after the fishing community of Ferryden, troubled by the vast numbers of shipwrecks and great loss of life along the coast, petitioned to establish a light on the headland, known as Scurdie Ness, or Montrose Point. ....

Snow sculpting... before the big thaw

Meanwhile, in Invergowrie, gran-of-nine Ann Hay created a dinosaur sculpture, using food colouring to dye it green.
While stunning, these seemed rather complex so I decided I’d create a snow dog.

First, I built up a rectangle of snow into what I imagined would be the shape of the dog, with a slight peak for his back.
I then used a spoon to carve out his legs and belly before attempting his tail.

The crumbling ruins of Gight Castle sit in breathtaking isolation high above the Ythan valley.
The 16th Century stronghold was the ancestral home of “mad, bad, dangerous” poet Lord Byron and it looms dramatically over a deep pool of water where bags of gold are said to lie.
I’ve enjoyed exploring the castle since I was a wee girl and always feel a great sense of wonder and excitement when the spectacular, rather desolate structure, reveals itself through the trees. ....
