School's out for long serving Nelson College teacher and 1st XV mentor


A Shirley Boys High School alumni, Grigg came to teach at Nelson College in 1996.
Taking over as coach of the 1st XV in 2000, the team achieved a Quadrangular Tournament win the following year under captain and future Mako centurion Robbie Malneek.
In the 20 years Grigg has been involved as coach or manager of the 1st XV, Nelson College has enjoyed a number of successes on the field – winning the Moascar Cup, Crusader secondary schools titles and making the Top 4 national 1st XV finals – to go with six Quad wins and four in the last six years.
He has also been instrumental in the school’s rugby academy programme, which combined academic school study with specialist rugby coaching that had set many boys up for higher honours in the professional ranks. ....

How the Tasman Mako became the big fish in New Zealand rugby


When the final whistle blew at Eden Park last month sealing Tasman s tense 13-12 victory over Auckland in the premiership final, Christie was part of the pandemonium in the Tasman coaches box, bear-hugging co-head coaches Clark Dermody and Andrew Goodman in unrestrained joy.
“The boys were courageous and stuck to the gameplan relentlessly – that’s what made it such a proud moment,” he said.
“It was definitely the biggest buzz I’ve had as a coach or player – on the back of a really hard fought season we had to learn from our mistakes and our losses and grew so much as a team – part of me wishes we were only halfway through the season because we were starting to hit our straps.” ....
