POLSON In response to the surging spike of COVID-19 cases, Special Olympics Montana has decided to move its annual Polar Plunge fund-raising activities to an all-virtual online event for the 2021 season. “The virtual polar plunge offers plunging participants the opportunity to show the athletes in our community that they have our support by participating at home safely with family, friends or teammates in socially-distanced plunges,” said Lindsey Campbell, five-valley outreach coordinator for Special Olympics Montana. The annual winter dip has drawn hundreds into the frigid waters of the Mission Valley in years past to support life-changing programs and the mission of Special Olympics, which works to provide year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. RONAN Four Mission Valley high school athletes ceremoniously inked their national letters of intent to play at regional colleges. Ronan High School seniors Brant Heiner and Madeline McCrea celebrated their signings in front of family, coaches, friends and fellow teammates late Wednesday afternoon during a signing event held at the Ronan event center. Heiner capped a milestone year with a third-place finish and all-state accolades during the State A Cross Country Championship held at Rebecca Farm in Kalispell in October. Heiner signed a letter of intent to run cross country and track at Montana Tech in Butte. Heiner said he chose to suit up for the Orediggers because he felt he could make “a big impact” in the young program. The school competed in its inaugural season this past fall. ....
PABLO Charred wood and crumpled metal are all that remain of two uninhabited mobile homes destroyed by fire early Sunday morning. At about 1:45 a.m., the Ronan Fire Department received a call concerning a report that multiple structures were on fire at the corner of Division Street and Old U.S. Highway 93. Ronan fire chief Chris Adler said two mobile homes were fully engulfed in flames and the roof had collapsed on one by the time firefighting crews arrived on scene. Mutual aid from Polson Rural Fire, Ronan Ambulance, Tribal Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene. ....
RONAN With COVID-19 hindering many Christmas gathering plans, the Ronan Chamber of Commerce hosted a Caravan of Lights parade on Friday evening. The Caravan of Lights, which started at 6 p.m., differed slightly from the city’s traditional parade of lights. This year’s caravan was designed to spread holiday cheer safely, especially for those in high-risk categories who’ve spent a lot of time isolated from friends and family. “We just wanted to explore an alternative way to bring some light and cheer to people in retirement communities,” said Ronan chamber member Whitney Liegakos in an earlier article as she reflected on the event. ....
