Union Power Minister R K Singh emphasized that the dialogue at COP28 should focus on reducing carbon dioxide emissions. He highlighted that developed countries, which contribute 80% of the total legacy carbon dioxide load, should take the lead in cutting down emissions. Singh stated that the discussion should be centered around emissions reduction rather than the choice of fuel. He also emphasized the need for energy transition and storage capacity augmentation to ensure round-the-clock renewable energy.

Thermal power is going to stay until energy storage becomes cost-effective for round-the-clock supply through renewable energy, he added. "The country absolutely needs at least 80,000 MW (80 GW) of capacity addition from today till 2031-32, which is essential to meet our base load requirements," Singh said while interacting with stakeholders in the power sector on Tuesday. Non-solar hours are going to be a serious challenge, considering growing power demand and weather events like in August this year, he said.
Singh presided over a review meeting on thermal power capacity addition in the country where independent power producers and state-owned generators NTPC, SJVN, NHPC, DVC, THDCIL, and NLCIL participated virtually and in physical mode on November 21.
