Blast shakes Riyadh three days after projectile intercepted
By AFP - Jan 26,2021 - Last updated at Jan 26,2021
RIYADH At least one loud explosion rattled Riyadh on Tuesday, AFP correspondents reported, three days after the kingdom intercepted a projectile over the Saudi capital.
Authorities in Saudi Arabia, which has come under repeated missile or drone attack from Houthi rebels in neighbouring Yemen since 2015, did not immediately report the cause of the blast.
The explosion shook windows across the Saudi capital at around 1:00pm (10:00 GMT), AFP correspondents and residents said.
Some residents reported on social media hearing two blasts, claiming that they saw smoke in the sky, apparently from the interception of an aerial target by Saudi defence forces.
RIYADH: Qatar-Saudi flights resumed on Monday as the neighbours normalise ties under a landmark agreement that ended a bitter three-year rift and allows families to reunite.
Saudi Arabia and its allies the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt in June 2017 slapped a blockade on Qatar that included closing airspace to the country over claims it backed Islamist groups and was too close to Iran charges Doha has always denied.
The quartet agreed to lift the restrictions at a Gulf Cooperation Council summit last week in the Saudi desert city of Al-Ula, after a flurry of diplomatic activity by outgoing US President Donald Trump’s administration.
