arabic networks saying he is walking around in tripoli and calls rebel forces criminals and traitors and rats. more and more the rebels do believe he is still in or near tripoli. in fact, they think two days of fierce fighting near the airport could be pretty significant. we are covering every angle of this story with multiple correspondents on the ground. sara sidner is in tripoli central square and we have arwa damon and frederik pleitgen and zain verjee. let s get to arwa damon right near the airport on the latest on the clashes. there were grad rockets fired at the airport complex earlier today. the fighting around here has been quite intense. and the rebel commander who led the assault on the airport believes that that fighting is directly linked to the whereabouts of colonel gadhafi himself. translator: the clashes are fierce because i think a route for gaffy to escape to other places. traffic all day and breaking people in the sunset and we spotted a convoy. ....

forces in libya are free tonight. late word of a new kidnapping and last ditch battles that may be linked to moammar gadhafi s escape plan. and cnn goes inside the virginia nuclear power plant near the epicenter of that historic quake. we have a lot of questions about nuclear safety and whether the east coast is prepared if another big one hits. wolf blitzer s off today. i m joe johns. you re in the situation room. hurricane irene is bearing town on the bahamas with winds of up to 120 miles an hour right now, and the national weather service warns this category 3 monster could be upgraded, upgraded to a category 4 tomorrow. that means irene could be capable of catastrophic damage when it slams the east coast in the days ahead. the storm has been pounding the turks and caicos and other islands and gaining strength along the way. there are reports of damage but so far no serious injuries. we do have a view from space that gives you an idea of just how big the storm ....

this is a crew speeding away from the rixos hotel in tripoli where gadhafi loyalists, the gunmen who had been holding these men and women captive for five-plus days. now and only now can they tell their story. we will hear it coming up. something here, the cnn crew, among dozens of international journalists, as i mentioned at the rixos hotel, between 30 and 35 journalists were held inside for five-plus days trying to negotiate the release according to our matthew chance, every hour, every minute of every day. the end came today when a cnn producer persuaded the local commander that the fight outside was over, that the gadhafi forces had lost. listen to this. well, i actually we ve spent time with him over the past few days sitting and talking to him about his kids, his family and so he started to come i really miss my family and i really want to go out and see my family who are really worried about me now, same thing for the 30-plus journalists sitting in the hote ....

battle to the compound of moammar gadhafi, pushing inside and knocking over statues of the long-time libyan leader. making off with weapons but finding no sign of him or his family. the reuters news agency reports that gadhafi has been heard on a local radio station. now according to reuters in his radio address gadhafi says his withdrawal from the compound was a tactical move. his location is still not known as we ve said. meantime, pockets of fighting remain, including at tripoli s airport. that s where cnn s arwa damon has been reporting. rebels took over the airport monday but it is still a target for loyalist troops. and international journalists are trapped in the rixos hotel in the libyan capital. the journalists including our own matthew chance, remain virtual prisoners being held by troops loyal to gadhafi. cnn s sara sidner was right in the middle of all the the chaos at that gadhafi compound. rebels invited her in as they swept through the complex. th ....
