Cleveland Play House’s virtual New Ground Theatre Festival offers first look at five new Cleveland-inspired plays

CLEVELAND, Ohio Cleveland Play House’s New Ground Theatre Festival is returning in the form of a two-part virtual event on May 15. The program, entitled “Mapping New Ground,” will give audiences a sneak peek at five new Cleveland-inspired plays commissioned by CPH in 2020.
The lineup includes George Brant’s “Crooked River Burning,” “I’m Back Now” by Charly Evon Simpson, Jessica Dickey’s “The Ghost Tour,” “Lake Erie Oubliette” by Chelsea Marcantel and Vichet Chum’s “Liébling.”
“In spite of the challenges from the pandemic, Cleveland Play House never stopped creating,” said Cleveland Play House Artistic Director Laura Kepley in a release. “Five new plays centered on Cleveland have been commissioned and developed over this year thanks to the Roe Green Fund for New Amer ....

High Noon) delivers a vivid chronicle about the classic 1969 movie
Midnight Cowboy, the only X-rated movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Frankel covers the film’s main contributors: James Leo Hurlihy, whose 1965 novel was the basis for the movie; director John Schlesinger, who took a chance on a novel “so bleak, troubling and sexually raw no ordinary film studio would go near it”; formerly blacklisted screenwriter Waldo Salt; actors Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman (whom Frankel interviewed); and casting director Marion Dougherty, who convinced Schlesinger to take a chance on then-unknown Voight. Frankel offers behind-the-scenes anecdotes, notably about the challenges of filming in New York City during a garbage strike, and in Texas, where the film crew needed protection from a den of rattlesnakes.
