GAVEL A recent attempt to sanitise the country’s electoral process suffered a setback last week over reported plan by some elements in the National Assemby to remove electronic transmission of results from the Electoral Act amendment Bill due for consideration by the National Assembly this week. Adedayo Akinwale reports It came as a rude shock, when news filtered in that electronic transmission of results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been expunged from the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021 billed for consideration by the two chambers of the National Assembly this week. The Section was believed to have been “smuggled” into the Bill as it was never part of the provisions agreed to by the stakeholders and the Senate Committee on INEC during their various engagements. ....

Northern minority Reps back southern governors, ask Buhari to implement resolutions Governors of the 17 southern states on Tuesday resolved to ban open grazing in the region and demanded the restructuring of the country, among other things. ADVERTISEMENT Members of the minority caucus in the House of Representatives from the 19 northern states have endorsed the recommendations of the Southern Governors’ forum. Governors of the 17 southern states, under the aegis of Southern Governors Forum (SGF), had on Tuesday, after a meeting in Asaba, Delta State, resolved to ban open grazing by herders and also called for the restructuring of the country. The caucus called on President Muhammadu Buhari to heed the genuine advice of governors from the South and immediately address the nation to assuage frayed nerves. The caucus said it was happy that the Southern Governors had finally come to terms with the negative effects of open grazing, which states in the North Central and other parts of the North have been battling with for decades. ....
