Halifax student welcomes school closures, others call for more widespread action

In addition to the school closures in the Halifax area, one school in Truro has closed, as well as three in the Sydney area. Those schools are closed until later this week for deep cleaning and contract tracing.
Premier Iain Rankin said no students in Cape Breton have tested positive, and there s no evidence of community spread.
But I want to assure all parents and teachers and staff and students that we are watching this very carefully. We ve added testing sites in the community, and we encourage everyone to get tested, including students, he said during Monday s briefing.  ....

HRM Schools Move to At-Home Learning

All public schools in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and surrounding areas will close Tuesday, April 27, and move to at-home learning beginning Thursday, April 29.
Out of an abundance of caution, the province is mandating that students in public schools within the restricted areas in HRM identified by public health learn from home.
“The safety and well-being of everyone in our schools is our main concern. Every decision we make for our schools is out of an abundance of caution and in consultation with public health,” said Derek Mombourquette, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development. “Moving schools in HRM and surrounding areas to at-home learning is a necessary step at this important juncture. I know this will be difficult for some families, but Nova Scotians have shown time and time again that they’ll step up in our fight against this virus.” ....

All public schools in the Halifax area to start at-home learning later this week

All public schools in Halifax Regional Municipality and surrounding areas not already doing so will close Tuesday and start preparations to move to at-home learning as of Thursday.
This move affects all pre-primary children and grades primary to 12 public school students in Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE), as well as Conseil scolaire acadian provincial (CSAP) schools and Chignecto Central s schools in the Enfield, Elmsdale and Mount Uniacke areas.
Nova Scotia s Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution and in consultation with public health.
Moving schools in HRM and surrounding areas to at-home learning is a necessary step at this important juncture, said Derek Mombourquette in a news release. Several Acadiana principals in running for state Principal of the Year
The Acadiana region boasts several principals in the running for state Principal of the Year, with five of the 24 semifinalists for 2022 Louisiana Principal of the Year hailing from the eight-parish region.
Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion parishes all are represented in the list of principal semifinalists released by the Louisiana Department of Education this week.

Ginger Richard, principal of Green T. Lindon Elementary School in Youngsville, was named the district Elementary Principal of the Year before moving on to the state competition.
Richard has been an educator in the Lafayette Parish School System for 17 years, starting as a teacher at Ridge Elementary where she was voted Teacher of the Year in 2008-09.  ....

16 Lafayette Parish school kitchens to get air-conditioning this summer


Kitchens at 16 Lafayette Parish schools that are not air-conditioned could see that changed by next semester, after the Lafayette Parish School Board awarded contracts for the projects Wednesday.
With a slight majority vote, the board approved assigning contracts for mechanical engineering services to two companies ADG Engineering and M&E Consulting, with the schools split between two phases.
ADG will work on Phase 1, which includes Acadiana High, Carencro Middle, Ovey Comeaux High, Katherine Drexel Elementary, J.W. Faulk Elementary, Myrtle Place Elementary and Woodvale Elementary.
M&E will do Phase 2, which comprises Broadmoor Elementary, Broussard Middle, Evangeline Elementary, Judice Middle, Lafayette High, Cpl. Michael Middlebrook Elementary, Ridge Elementary and Truman Early Childhood Education Center. ....
