This year, after a year of pandemic-related disruptions, those two trends could combine: People wanting to get back in shape and lose the “COVID-19” just in time to look better by the pool and beach.
But experts say exercisers and instructors need to be careful, or it could lead to a spike in cases of a rare but serious even life-threatening condition called rhabdomyolysis. ....

Will COVID Stifle Usual January Rush to Gyms?

Dec. 30, 2020 In most years, January means gyms are packed with newbies and their resolutions to finally get in shape.
But this year amid the pandemic, that New Year’s rush could instead be spread out over the coming months, industry experts, owners, and gymgoers say.
Like almost everything else, the fitness industry took a big hit this year. Many states ordered gyms and studios closed or restricted to stem the spread of COVID-19. Some closed permanently; a handful of chains closed or filed for bankruptcy protection.
Even when gyms have been allowed to open, many members have stayed home. Some have been racking up couch time, no doubt but many others have adapted to virtual training, or on their own with increased jogging or living-room yoga. ....

Covid-19: Drivers urged to avoid ports as France shuts border

Lorry drivers have been urged not to travel to ports in Kent, East Sussex and Hampshire after France closed its border with the UK for 48 hours.
In a bid to ease congestion towards Dover, Operation Stack has been activated on the coast-bound M20.
Passenger ferries and lorry freight bound for France have been suspended from Dover, Portsmouth and Newhaven.
However, speaking to BBC Radio 4, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said goods were still moving.
Most of freight is not accompanied and that can still flow, of course, he said. ....

Countries in Europe are concerned about a new strain of the coronavirus that authorities say may spread more easily.
France has banned trucks from the United Kingdom for a period of 48 hours while the new COVID-19 variant is assessed.
