talked today about what to do about it and we asked our medical correspondent, dr. jon lapook, to bring us up to date. reporter: today an f.d.a. panel heard just how frustrated doctors are about the shortage of drugs. pharmaceutical representatives spend bazillions of dollars trying to influence me to buy their drugs. on most of these drugs, i m sold. i ll buy them, you know? i ll use them, okay? just make them! reporter: drugs used by hospitals make up the bulk of the more than 200 medications in critical short supply. 87% are generic, not brand name. according to the f.d.a., in the past five years, drug shortages have tripled. valery jenson has been studying the problem for the f.d.a. many of them have involved cancer drugs, oncology drugs as well as anesthesia drugs and other drugs for critical care. so this has had a large impact on patients. reporter: that s what happened to 56-year-old marcia goodman. we visited her last month just as she was getting ready to
