Killeen Educators Association celebrates teacher access to PPE

The Killeen Educators Association, which represents teachers and other employees in Killeen ISD, is celebrating the continued access to personal protective equipment, or PPE, when they return in the fall.
In September 2020, the Texas State Teachers Association filed a grievance on behalf of KEA against KISD. The grievance cited teachers and paraprofessional members have been forced to work in an unsafe environment during the coronavirus pandemic.
Though the district will not be allowed to require face masks going into the 2021-2022 school year and virtual learning will not be an option, teachers will have increased access to personal protective equipment, such as air filters or desk shields. ....

KISD hourly employees ask school board for raise

Seven Killeen Independent School District employees urged the school board Tuesday to consider a pay raise for hourly employees, some detailing second and third jobs they have had to take on to make ends meet.
During the public forum portion of the meeting, Killeen Educators Association members, and KISD employees, shared their proposal for the district’s thousands of employees: a 4% raise for teachers, nurses, counselors, and librarians; and a raise of $3 per hour for support personnel, hourly employees such as aides, secretaries, custodians, bus monitors, bus drivers and cafeteria workers.
Jason Wylie, of the Texas State Teachers Association, pointed out that the district has an employee turnover rate higher than the state average. ....

KISD hourly employees address lack of rights

Five individuals spoke Tuesday evening to the Killeen Independent School District board of trustees about the lack of due process rights for district educational support professionals.
Killeen Educators Association president Rick Beaulé spoke during public forum citing the names of 10 Texas school districts, including Austin ISD and Fort Worth ISD, that already have adopted due process rights for their lowest-paid employees.
“The law of the land in these districts gives these Education Support Professionals, or ESP’s, a guaranteed review of disciplinary issues prior to dismissal, rather than the fear of being terminated for little or no reason,” Beaulé said. ....

Will masks still be required in the Killeen area?

The Texas governor announced on Tuesday that the statewide mask mandate will be coming down next week, but masks could still be required in some places at the local level.
On Tuesday, Killeen city spokeswoman Hilary Shine said that the mask mandate made by Mayor Jose Segarra last year had been superseded by the governor’s order in July.
“The Governor’s order removes the statewide mask requirement and capacity restrictions but allows for each business to determine what practices they wish to employ,” Shine said by email on Tuesday.
Segarra said that at this point it will be mainly on a voluntary basis, for businesses and individuals. ....
