View Comments VERO BEACH A former Vero Beach police chief who later served as city manager has been inducted into the Florida Law Enforcement Officers’ Hall of Fame, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said Saturday. Jim Gabbard, who served as police chief in Vero Beach for 19 years before becoming the city manager until retiring in 2010, is a 2020 inductee into the Hall of Fame. The 2020 and 2021 inductees were honored Saturday in a ceremony over which FDLE Commissioner Richard L. Swearingen presided. Gabbard’s law enforcement career began in 1968 when he joined the police force in West Palm Beach. Gabbard, whose father was a police officer, spent 18 years there before being appointed chief in Vero Beach in 1986.

Eight days ago, with guns drawn, investigators with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement showed up at the home of Florida s former COVID-19 data chief Rebekah Jones. Officials were there to serve a search warrant. Jones is under investigation, accused of hacking into the state s emergency alert system. Jones created the state s original COVID-19 tracking dashboard. She now runs an independent version.  Governor Ron DeSantis fired Jones in the spring after she accused the state of manipulating Coronavirus infection data to downplay the pandemic.
