Planning controversy over shoot flightponds

There’s a row going on in Dumfries and Galloway, one of Britain’s heartlands of duck shooting and a destination for wildfowlers from all over Britain. The owners of Eskdalemuir have apparently gone over the heads of the local council and asked the Scottish government at Holyrood for retrospective permission for two commercial flightponds. The applicants cite delays in the planning process for their decision. Eskadalemuir, alert readers may remember, is home to Gardners Guns, the team that set up a super-long rifle range in the teeth of fierce opposition from local Buddhist monks, who claimed that the noise of shooting was disrupting their natural harmony and meditation. Reports in the press last year that the Buddhists from the nearby Samye Ling monastery had successfully derailed the retrospective planning application for the range seem to have been premature. There are still super-long-range shooting competitions taking place there. The flightponds issue is an interesting one, as ....

News this week: Land access could cause problems for ecosystems plus concerns about rising costs for clay shooting businesses

Problems for ecosystems Richard Negus reports: Wildlife could suffer under a proposed new countryside access act, leading conservationists warn. News that a future Labour government would legislate for a “default of access” to the British countryside, has troubled leading practical conservationists. Jim McMahon MP, shadow environment secretary, vowed his party would “open more of the countryside for people to explore”. While the pressure group Right To Roam was effusive about the announcement, Dr Roger Draycott, head of advisory and education at the GWCT, countered by saying: “Disturbance, particularly by dogs off leads, is a real problem for ground-nesting birds.” Dr Draycott’s informed opinion was echoed by Adam Steed, a Suffolk-based wild-bird keeper and previous winner of the GWCT East Anglian Grey Partridge Award: “I love to see people using the countryside responsibly; however, we regularly see walkers straying off paths and dogs running kilometres away from owner ....

Land Rover brand to be dropped in restructure

Nothing stands still. Not so long ago, every shoot up and down the country would have had a few Land Rovers in the mix and it was the keeper’s truck of choice, but as The Vapors sang in 1980, it’s been “turning Japanese” for a while. Hilux and Isuzu are now the order of the day, and it has been announced that Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), the parent company, is to cease production of ‘Land Rover’ branded cars altogether. (Read more on the Land Rover here.)  Land Rover was born in the post-war period when the nation was fighting to establish itself on the global automotive stage. Since then, however, things have changed and lots of their offerings have come to be seen as outdated. Richard Negus, hedgelayer and ST contributor, described his Defender ownership as “cold, expensive, and wet”. He continued that apart from waving at other Land Rover users, there’s nothing a Defender can do that an Isuzu can’t.  Aficionados will be pleased to know that while Land Rover is bein ....
