This morning. an editorial attempting to defend mitt romney on this. they write in part, mitt romney s failures to communicate are common among businessmen. still, his business now is politics. and as the republican front-runner, he s got an obligation to explain how conservative principles and policies can address america s current problems. they go on to say, it s probably time to stop pretending that you can relate to people who have troubles. embrace who you are. you are mitt romney, you succeeded, you are a wealthy guy. this deal about going out and trying to reach out and show that you can relate to the problems of the people comes across as inauthentic because it is. and you know, richard, in 1998 when george h.w. bush was running with a million different problems, he let everybody know he drove around washington listening to country music. no, i don t want to hear that. be a leader, be who you are, ....

with jon huntsman. i m wolf blitzer, you re in the situation room. the first primary beghaj at midnight in new hampshire. most polls close three hours from now. we ll have complete coverage. here is what we re watching for. first, mitt romney s margin of victory. final polls show him with a nearly 20-point lead. if romney wins big he may see almost invincible heading into south carolina. if he doesn t win big, he may seem beatable, at least some experts predict. second, who comes in second, jon huntsman gambled on a good showing in new hampshire. he has the chance to show he s a viable candidate. they play very well among many in new hampshire, and could help him emerge as the anti-romney candidate. finally, independenting can stroh in this open primary, so how will they vote? they may decide the winner, who will that signal for next november? we re watching all of this unfold. new hampshire state officials are expecting a record turnout of a quarter million ....

but just in right now, new poll numbers painting a very telling picture of the race for the republican presidential nomination. we can now report that mitt romney is the candidate to beat in at least two of the crucial first four voting contests of the 2012 election with herman cain a sometimes close, sometimes distant second. our new cnn time orc poll of republican voters just released shows romney on top in iowa s january 3rd caucuses, leading herman cain by three points, but that s well within the sampling error of plus or mines. in new hampshire, romney has a lead over cain. in south carolina, a two-point edge for romney, again, within the margin of error. in florida, it s romney 30% to cain s 18%. before the polls came out, romney made it clear he s setting his sights very high. i think the greatest threat to my success would be president obama and i m planning on beating him soon. let s talk about these new poll numbers with our chief political correspondent ....
