May 4, 2021 Lawmakers, Restaurant Workers Calling For Minimum Wage Boost
(Harrisburg, PA) State lawmakers and restaurant workers are calling for a boost in the minimum wage. Many restaurant servers and bartenders are being paid around two-dollars and 83-cents an hour and survive off tips, but workers say that is not enough to survive today. Department of Labor and Industry officials say the ridiculously low tipped wage grants managers an unprecedented power to reward or punish workers with shifts, tables and tasks that can make or break bank accounts. They added that this has fostered an environment where racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination can flourish. The workers and officials are demanding that every worker in the state be paid at least 12-dollars an hour.

Harrisburg, PA – Department of Labor & Industry (L&I) Acting Secretary Jennifer Berrier joined Sen. Art Haywood and restaurant workers Samuel Jones, Nour Qutyan, James Conway, and Richard Gegick today to demand an increase in the minimum wage to $12 an hour with a pathway to $15 an hour, including for tipped workers who can be paid as little as $2.83 per Pennsylvania law. $2.83 an hour is simply not enough to survive today in Pennsylvania, where the living wage has been calculated to be more than $11.50 an hour, said Acting Secretary Berrier. When Andrea Grove opened her Harrisburg coffee shop, she budgeted a salary of $15 an hour for her employees.
That hourly rate is more than $7 above the federal and state minimum wage of $7.25 an hour and put Ms. Grove on one side of a years-long debate about whether the minimum wage should increase and, if so, by how much and how quickly.
Ms. Grove, who opened Elementary Coffee in 2014, ran into some of the problems business owners worry about when discussing a minimum wage increase. The $15 rate may limit the number of employees she can bring on board and it could prevent her from franchising the business or opening more locations across the state.
