Lots of candidates for election in Worcester but not a lot of signatures


Potential candidates are still flocking to City Hall to take out nomination papers for the November election, but with the May 11 deadline to return those papers looming, it s still unclear who will make the cut to get on the November municipal election ballot. 
Since Feb. 5, 13 candidates have taken out nomination papers for either at-large City Council, School Committee or district City Council seats, bringing the total to a robust 35. 
Since we last checked in, Sue Mailman joined Jermoh Kamara in the School Committee race. Well, at least it was a race, until longtime committee member Jack Foley s announcement last week that he s not running again. Another longtime member, John Monfredo, also recently announced he won t seek reelection, which means that as it stands, Mailman and Kamara could sail onto the board unchallenged.  ....

Worcesteria: Police union hints at action beyond 'Blue Flu'

UNION BLUES: Not only do we have to keep on guard for COVID-19 and the common flu this winter, it appears Worcester has also been possibly plagued by a case of “Blue Flu.” Writing for the Telegram & Gazette, Steven H. Foskett reports that, The city is investigating an allegation that a group of city police officers recently coordinated a sick out action following the discipline of a fellow officer. In a statement released Wednesday, City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. said the city is aware of the allegation, and is taking it seriously. He said the Police Department and the city Human Resources Department are conducting an investigation.” The action, according to Foskett and pretty much anyone on local social media, was “to protest discipline … the department meted out against an officer who was recorded on video appearing to slap a man on a gurney in July on Main Street.” Now, investigations are underway, so we ll hopefully find out what real ....
