ROCHESTER, Mich. (FOX 2) - Adam Schmidt said he didn t want to be part of a sexual abuse lawsuit against his former coach and former figure skating organization but said he had to do it to help others.
Schmidt got just a little bit of closure and perhaps some justice after he said he was sexually abused years ago by his coach. He won millions in a lawsuit but a new law is also being put in place to protect future athletes so his nightmare is not relived by someone else. ....

US Figure Skating Pays $1.45M To End Sex Abuse Suit
Law360 (January 15, 2021, 5:23 PM EST) A former skater has reached a $1.45 million settlement with the U.S. Figure Skating Association after alleging in a lawsuit the organization did not protect him from a coach who sexually abused him as a minor, an attorney for the skater told Law360 on Friday.
Adam Schmidt, 36, is a former member of the U.S. National Figure Skating Team and alleged in a 2019 suit filed in California state court that his former coach, Richard Callaghan, sexually abused him between the ages of 14 and 16 while U.S. Figure Skating did nothing to stop it even though it had been alerted. ....

U.S. Figure Skating has reached a $1.45 million settlement with a former skater who had accused the organization of failing to protect him from sexual abuse by Richard Callaghan, a once-prominent coach of Olympians.
The former skater, Adam Schmidt, had filed a lawsuit in San Diego in 2019 that said that Mr. Callaghan had repeatedly abused him from 1999 to 2001, beginning when Mr. Schmidt was 14 years old. ....
