An international group of scientists is demanding scientific journals demand more transparency from researchers in computer-related areas when accepting their reports for publication.
They also want computational researchers to include information about their code, models and computational environments in published reports.
Their call, published in Nature Magazine in October, was in response to the results of research conducted by Google Health that was published in Nature last January.
The research claimed an artificial intelligence system was faster and more accurate at screening for breast cancer than human radiologists.
Google funded the study, which was led by Google Scholar Scott McKinney and other Google employees. ....

More than 80 percent of 650 cybersecurity and IT professionals surveyed by Check Point Software Technologies in July said their traditional security solutions either do not work at all, or only provide limited functions in the cloud.
This indicates that organizations cloud migrations and deployments are racing ahead of their security teams abilities to defend against attacks and breaches, according to TJ Gonen, head of the company s cloud product line.
Their existing security solutions only provide limited protections against cloud threats, and teams often lack the expertise needed to improve security and compliance processes, said Gonen. ....

Service outage detection website Downdetector on Nov. 19, reported that the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Internet infrastructure service, which many websites and apps use as a backbone, was having problems.
Downdetector s historical data shows that AWS had also experienced problems on Nov. 2 and Nov. 16.
Crashes in the cloud are highly unusual, Kristin Brown, senior PR manager at Amazon Web Services, told the E-Commerce Times when asked about the Nov. 19 crash.
Amazon s service health dashboard indicates that everything has been operating normally.with no widespread disruptions, Brown said. We have millions of customers. If there had really been a disruption of service, we would probably see more reports, in addition to the service health dashboard reporting the disruption. ....

The use of smart and connected devices promises to make our lives easier, but it might also give their manufacturers greater control over our lives.
