Traditional Christmas lunch for Sydney's homeless drastically scaled-back due to coronavirus surge

On a regular Christmas Day, around 1000 homeless people sit down at the Wayside Chapel in Kings Cross for a Christmas lunch of ham, prawns and pudding.
This year, just 81 people will get a seat.
The homelessness charity is drastically scaling back its iconic event in light of the COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney and government restrictions.
Takeaway meals will replace the traditional sit-down affair for many, with those in need able to pick up a free breakfast or lunch and eat it elsewhere.

After a brief return to normality in church services, NSW Christian leaders are now preparing a return to online broadcasting to send out messages of hope on Christmas Day after a year of devastation for many.
The Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, Glenn Davies, who will address parishioners online at 10.30am on Thursday, said people desperately need the joy of Christmas this year and that this season represented “the great unmasking of God”.

Sydney COVID: Homeless to get their Christmas ham and turkey in takeaway containers

Sydney s homeless will have takeaway turkey and ham outdoors instead of a traditional sit-down meal on Christmas Day, as charity groups quickly adapt to the latest COVID-19 restrictions.
Wesley Mission chief executive officer Reverend Keith Garner said Christmas lunch would be provided outside in takeaway containers from 12pm to 2pm. Festive music would also be playing.
On Christmas Day itself, we can t have the usual meals we wanted to inside. But outside the Wesley Centre on Pitt Street we will be serving takeaway Christmas meals for people, he said.
