COVID draws lots of students to UC Santa Barbara course on 'positive psychology'

For almost a year, UC Santa Barbara has been hosting classes online, turning the Isla Vista anchor into a ghost town because of the pandemic. On a recent weekday visit, bike paths were empty and just a handful of masked students milled around the once bustling seaside campus.

As the pandemic drags on, it can feel like an accomplishment to get on Zoom, sporting a dress shirt and sweatpants. But we’re powering through and banking on better times ahead.
It might not be a lot, but it’s a sign of resilience.
“My definition is being able to bounce back from difficult times and just any sort of setback, being able to reach that and even being able to improve upon that from where you were,” says Samantha Blodgett. She’s a senior studying psychology at UC Santa Barbara and the co-founder of the school’s Resilience Summit and Certificate Program. ....

College students have a lot on their plates these days: an upended academic career because of the pandemic, the specter of the virus itself, and the general stress of exams and assignments. All of that fretting and stressing prompted a UC Santa Barbara student and professor to team up and launch the Resilience Summit and Certificate Program.  ....
