A court in Lilongwe has fined 15 bar owners K20 000 each for failure to close their pubs at 8pm gazetted time.
‘This selfish, careless behaviour must stop!”
The Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate Court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced the bar owners to pay the fine or in default serve one month imprisonment with hard labour for contravening Covid -19 regulations which is contrary to section 20(2)(a) of the Malawi Public Health Act.
State prosecutors Humphreys Makhalila and Jimmy Kampira told the court that the convicts on January 16, 2021 were found operating night clubs beyond the time limit set by Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 prevention measures. ....

Malawi Court Fines 15 Bar Owners For Defying Covid-19 Prevention Measures

The Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate Court on Tuesday January 19, 2021, convicted and sentenced 15 bar owners to pay a fine of K20, 000 each or in default serve 1 month imprisonment with hard labour for contravening Covid -19 regulations which is contrary to section 20(2)(a) of the Malawi Public Health Act.
The convicts are Kingsley Goodson, Wonderful Milanzi, Kesinala Lovemore, and 12 others.
The court through Kawale Police Station Prosecutors Sub Inspector Humphreys Makhaliha and Sub Inspector Jimmy Kampira, heard that the convicts on January 16, 2021 were found operating night clubs beyond the time limit set by Presidential Task Force on covid-19 prevention measures.
Appearing in court, the 15 night club owners pleaded guilty to the charge of contravening covid-19 regulations. ....

Nigerian Jailed 10 Years Over Drug Trafficking

A court in Lilongwe has sentenced a 60-year-old Nigerian national to 10 years in prison over a drug trafficking deal that led to the death of a Malawian in Brazil.
The convict identified as Alex Ojukua in 2018 sent young Malawian Riyard Randeree to Brazil to deliver drugs.
State Prosecutor in the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Eunice Ndingo told the court that Ojukua made Randeree swallow the drugs.
He then escorted the Malawian to Kamuzu International Airport from where Randeree started his journey to Brazil.
In Brazil, Randeree died because of the drugs he swallowed.
At the time of the incident, Ojukua was the tenant of Randereeâs father at Area 47 in Lilongwe. ....

Chisale's fake certificate case adjourned to January 11

The Senior Resident Magistrate court in Lilongwe on Thursday adjourned a case involving Norman Chisale to 11 January next year where a ruling on objections made by defense will be made.
Chisale who is security aide to former President Peter Mutharika was in court today for continuation of his trial where he is being accused of personating a person named in a JCE certificate, presenting false information to a person employed in public office and intimidation.
The objections being made are relating to a request by the state to amend the charge sheet.
Senior Resident Magistrate Shyreen Yona Chirwa has directed the defense to submit submissions to the court by 4 January 2021 and the state to do the same on 8 January 2021. ....
