rescue chambers of some sort? that s how they re going to get the miners out? tell me about that. yes, sir. the chilean navy is at work right now designing three of these capsules. one for each one of the holes being drilled. we re told that it could take up to an hour to three hours per miner to pull them out. and it s going to be quite a scary ride. they re going to have oxygen in case there s any kind of problem. they re going to have to communication and water so they can stay hydrated on that two to three-hour journey. there s been discussion about blindfolding and possibly giving sedatives to the miners because it will be a scary process those last few hours getting them out of the mine. no decisions yet on how to prepare the miners for that for the final moments of captivity going up in the rescue capsules. maybe they ll be a good idea. but they are brave men, anyway. the fact is they ve been in a closed space and they ve been doing it for a long time.
union starting at 9:00 a.m. eastern. everyone holding out hope that four miners in that west virginia mining accident who were unaccounted for possibly could have made to one of the rescue chambers and 0 possibly just waiting to be rescue. that is not the case. we have now learned. the search for the missing miners is now over. their bodies found late last night. we re in west virginia. reporter: this west virginia community was hoping for a miracle, but the sliver of hope held to the last five days is gone. none of the chambers had been deployed. and none of our miners suffered. so this journey this journey is ended, and now the healing will start. reporter: the governor says that the families are pulling on
perhaps can you give us perspective on what the hopes were in this final rescue that took place today. yeah, natalie. all week long the governor of west virginia had been saying that the odds were against them. but there is still that sliver of hope. and i think the first sentence of this press conference that you just saw kind of sums it up. he said the miracle we had prayed for didn t happen. he said that none of the chambers had been deployed. all week long officials had thought that if the four missing coal miners were alive that they would be in these refuge chambers where they would have food, water and oxygen. and the mission of these rescue workers was to go to those rescue chambers to see if the missing miners were there. but they, these chambers hadn t been used. and so for these families, this is really a closure to long five long excruciating days. all right.

deep, 1100 feet deep inside the mine to hopefully use a camera and can see about 100 feet out and see that final rescue chamber to see if it was deployed. we just learned about 20 minutes ago, they were able to make it to one of rescue chambers and it was not deployed. this final rescue chamber, really this is it. they call it the inerting pushing, pumping all of the nitrogen to improve the air quality so if they can get back in there and attempt the fourth rescue, they can do so. they were still referring to this as a rescue mission. just to sort of explain to people that were listening to that, when they say the rescue chamber was not deployed. does that mean none of the miners still down there made it to the rescue chamber or attempted to use it. reporter: absolutely. they can tell if its deployed,
