If voters have any specific questions about whether they are qualified to vote by absentee or which ward they are located in, they are encouraged to contact the municipal clerkâs office at either 662-841-6505 or 662-841-6506.
Kim Hanna, Tupeloâs municipal clerk, said this year s ballot will be contained to a single sheet, and even though two of the cityâs seven council seats are uncontested, the contested mayoral race means âthere will be a contested race in every single ward.â
Mississippi has some of the most restrictive absentee voting laws in the country with no provisions for early voting, and only a limited number of excuses that voters may legally cast absentee ballots in advance of election day.
When Mayor Jason Shelton was running for his first term eight years ago, he campaigned on building unity among voters. Running as a Democrat in a majority Republican city, he focused on local issues and talked up his hometown roots in an effort to create a feeling of bringing together the community.
Voters rewarded him with a win. Governing in the same manner for four years, he was once again awarded with a second term after facing only token opposition.
Democrat Victor Fleitas and Republican Todd Jordan â both seeking to replace Shelton, who has decided not to seek a third term â are following the playbook Shelton used four and eight years ago. They are focused on local issues, talking up community and putting forth their visions for the future.
