AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM/AP) Texas already has some of the loosest gun laws in the U.S., and now state lawmakers are considering making it legal to carry a handgun in public without a permit, background check or training.
In the past, governors didn’t champion it. Police persuaded Republican leaders to avoid it. And two years ago, when a frustrated gun rights activist showed up outside the home of the Texas House speaker, the resulting outcry quickly snuffed it out again.
Senate committee votes 5-1 in favor of Rep. Schaeferâs permitless carry bill

AUSTIN, Texas (KLTV) - A senate committee hearing on Rep. Matt Schaeferâs bill which would legalize permitless gun carry got underway in Austin Thursday.
The bill passed committee with a 5 to 1 vote; Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr., was the lone nay vote.

HB 1927 will go to the full senate for vote in the near future. If senators vote in favor, it will then go to Gov. Abbott.
In addition to invited testimony, there were 146 public witnesses signed up to testify for and against HB 1927, which is authored by Schaefer (R-Tyler). Those testimonies ended at around 7 p.m., and the vote was taken at about 7:15 p.m.

Dan Patrick says he is optimistic about its chances of passing even though he is still rounding up the votes. We re gonna come out with a strong bill, and I ll believe we ll pass it because we brought people together, Patrick told conservative radio host Dana Loesch on Thursday afternoon. And hopefully it ll be on the governor s desk soon, and we ll get it signed.
