WHRO - What Is High School Like During A Pandemic? Show Us With A Video

The way COVID-19 changed education is a conversation that’s largely focused on big-picture policy.
With schools mostly closed for a year, journalists lost access to some of the most honest, reliable sources about how education is going: The students.
There hasn’t been a real chance for reporters to see what’s really going on at the schools, what are the big issues with students, or see the impressive and creative work many students in Hampton Roads do every day.

We’re trying to get in touch with high schoolers who want to show us through micro-vlogs (like these ones on TikTok) what a school day, and school events, like graduation and prom, are like. ....

SALT LAKE CITY When Yara Ahmed first shuffled onto the Judge Memorial Catholic High School campus as an unsure freshman, she had designs on engineering classes, not sharing the national limelight with accomplished storytellers.
“I never expected to love journalism the way I love it now,” Ahmed said during a Zoom interview. “I never even would have thought of joining this class if not for Mr. Sloan reaching out to me.”
Dr. Chris Sloan is chairman of the JMCHS English Department; he teaches English, new media and photography, and also is the advisor to The Bulldog Press. ....

Joan Ganz Cooney Center - Not the Only One Anymore: Empowering Diverse Young Voices

by Victoria Hodge
December 18, 2020
Growing up, I was used to being the “only one.” I was the only Black girl in many of my elementary school classrooms, newspaper staff, debate team, and even in college lectures at the University of Virginia. That anxious feeling of being surrounded by faces that were not like my own was a familiar one.

As an aspiring journalist, I expect I will often be the “only one” in the workplace. While 38% of newsrooms have made diversity gains in the last 15 years, many publications are still lacking in overall diversity. According to this 2018 Pew Research Center study, “newsroom employees are more likely to be white and male than U.S. workers overall.” My worries about feeling underrepresented are not unfounded. ....
