Why I became a journalist
I developed a love for reading and writing at a young age, so I always knew I wanted to do something that combined those two things.
I had the opportunity to listen to USA TODAY reporter/columnist Christine Brennan speak at an event about her job and, even though I was only 10 at the time, I knew that was what I wanted to do.
Soon after, I started reading my hometown newspaper The Toledo Blade every morning and sometimes even during my high school classes. It helped me see the importance of community journalism.
I wrote for my high school newspaper and first got a taste for daily news reporting at Ohio University s student newspaper The Post, and I haven t looked back.
Why I became a journalist
I ve always been interested in writing. As a kid, I wrote my own books, often using my favorite animal (a polar bear) as a main character.
In third or fourth grade I started my own newspaper, which I called The Filby News.
When my teacher at the time found out about it, she encouraged me to work on it with some of my classmates. We did so for about as long as it could capture our attention, which was probably a few weeks but seemed like much longer.
Years later in high school, I took a journalism class to fill my schedule and then a photojournalism class the next semester. I had an awesome teacher who made the class fun and taught us that journalism was a public service.
