Only until then are you positive you have it. even then, experts say, sound in the ocean can play so many tricks on your ears. several people can look at a signal and see different things. because all they re really recording is sound energy. false positives from fishing and research equipment left in the area. from debris and thermal conditions. from the vessel itself can also play tricks on the techs. phoenix s operators are good at weeding out false positives. they do it by carefully monitoring the specific frequencies and repetition rate. and at centers off-board, they re highly trained to block out any other potential sounds. paul nelson, who worked the search for air france flight 447 describes the work as meticulous, tedious, time devouring. there s two shifts. they work 12-hour shifts. the first crew will work from midnight to noon. the next team will work noon to midnight. you re monitoring the weather. you re watching what s coming as ....

All they re recording is sound energy. reporter: false positives from fishing equipment left in the area, from debris and thermal conditions, from the vessel itself can also play tricks. phoenix operators are good at weeding out false positives. they monitor the specific frequencies and repetition rate. and they re highly trained to be disciplined and discriminate to block out any other potential sounds. paul nelson who worked the search for air france flight 447 describes the sonar teches work as meticulous, tedious, time devouring. there are two shifts that work 12-hour shifts. first wuorks midnight to noon, the next noon to midnight. you re monitoring the weather, you re watching what s coming as far as weather, you re monitoring the seas, and you re sitting in front of the screen hoping and praying that you re going to hear something. reporter: does it drive them a little stir crazy? ....

Is very different. it wasn t done by the towed locator, the ping locator behind ocean shield. this was dropped by an aircraft. it s one of the sonabuoys that s been put into the water and has managed to give a signal. now, what we know is the frequency s in the right area. they don t believe it s of natural origin. and they believe it is a mechanical. but they haven t given us any details. for example, we don t know what the frequency is, we don t know what the repetition rate is. we don t know anything like that. we do know it was at about 1,000 meters. 1,000 meters under the surface. we also know now for sure, malaysian authorities have confirmed this that the final words from the cockpit came from the captain, not the co-captain. well, it s still it s still yes, it s believed to be. i m putting it like that. because people who know both voices have said that this is the captain s voice. right. good night malaysian 370. the final words from the cockpit. two minutes be ....

well, i don t think so, unless it s a very well-trained mammal, who has good laboratory technique. we can measure to ten thousandths of a second on the repetition rate. and we expect that not to vary. and we talked about certain signatures, because you have certain repetition rates and certain signals and all of that. and some aquatic life or ocean life, an animal or mammal would have to do the same sort of thing in order to repeat that and that s highly, highly unlikely. let s move on now. leyla says, where exactly are each of the black boxes located on the plane? jim tilmon? well, there are a number of places they generally put them. generally, most airplanes will have the boxes in the tail, in the vertical fin. some place, they think, is going to survive the worst part of a crash. a few of them have been, from time to time, put further forward and high in the fuselage, but most are near the tail. ....

Is technically possible that they did, because of the ocean liars, the gradient, the temperatures, it s technically possible they picked up the same ping from the black boxes, if that s what they turn out to be. indeed, yes, the answer is yes. mike, i imagine there s a lot of noise in the ocean. what other, if any other, natural sounds, could be confused for the pinger? we ve talked about this throughout the day. we can t really identify a sound that would be misconstrued as this pinger sound. as you heard earlier, there s multiple aspects to the pinger. not just the frequency, but the pulse rate, the repetition rate, and it appears to be consistent with what we would expect to hear from an aircraft pinger. yeah, as paul has been saying all along, there are other signatures that go along with these emergency pingers, and it appears from the information that angus houston gave last night, that they are they carry all of those signatures. but mike, are you concerned that ....
