Students 'punished' for joining the rent strike

STUDENTS at a London university say they are being punished for joining a rent strike after management backtracked on giving them refunds.
Campaigners say that Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is now withholding refunds in a bid to crack down on rent strikes as a form of protest among students.
Earlier this year, more than 350 students at the east London university went on strike in order to win compensation for unused university accommodation during the Covid crisis.
The action was called off on May 16 after campaigners secured rent discounts of up to £2,500 for students in halls as well as other measures and students were given a deadline of May 25 to resume paying their rent.  ....

Speaking to the rent striker students fighting 'targeted' evictions

Felix was given 28 days notice to leave halls, and has struggled to devote adequate time to studies while navigation the eviction and appeals process. As a key QMUL Rent Strike organiser, they’ve also spent time helping other evicted students.
A statement from QMUL Rent Strike adds that students have been given insufficient support following their eviction, waiting weeks for help with applying to COVID hardship funds, and in some cases being made homeless. The statement also notes that QMUL evicted a disproportionate number of students (111) between 2017 and 2019, when compared with other London universities.
“Only very occasionally do we have such significant issues with a resident that we have to issue a Notice to Quit,” a spokesperson for the university tells Dazed. “However, when students endanger their own lives, and the lives of others, for example by disabling fire safety equipment or repeatedly breaching coronavirus regulations, we have no option but to req ....

Student rent strikers targeted with eviction at London university, campaigners claim

STUDENTS at an east London university have been evicted from university housing because of their involvement in rent strikes, campaigners alleged today.
The group organising the ongoing rent strike at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) says that 20 students have been kicked out since September, leaving some homeless in the middle of the pandemic.
Activists said that the university is using “minor rule breaches” such as tampering with fire alarms to target students who are withholding rent.
Since January, students at dozens of universities nationwide have joined rent strikes, which have grown into the largest such movement in 40 years, amid anger at being forced to pay for rooms they cannot inhabit, limited face-to-face teaching and other restrictions.  ....
